MARRIAGE WILL NEVER BE MY PORTION” – 46-YEAR-OLD NIGERIAN WOMAN EXPLAINS WHY SHE HAS NEVER WANTED TO GET MARRIED
A 46-year-old Nigerian woman has stirred intense reactions online after openly sharing why marriage has never been a priority in her life despite her age and relationship experiences.
Speaking candidly in a viral video, the woman, identified as Temitayo, revealed that she has never been married, engaged, or even shown interest in wedding preparations throughout her life.
According to her, the decision was not influenced by a lack of opportunities or romantic relationships, but rather by a personal choice she made from a young age after observing the marriages around her.
“I’m 46 years old, Nigerian, Yoruba. I have never been married before, I have never been engaged, I’ve never looked at wedding pictures, wedding dresses, or venues. Marriage has never been a priority for me,” she said.
Temitayo explained that although she grew up in what many would consider a stable Nigerian home, with her parents remaining together until her mother passed away, her observations of marriages within her family and society shaped her views negatively.
The data analyst said she has spent years watching how women in previous generations were treated by their husbands and concluded that marriage was not a path she wanted for herself.
She stated that many of the women she grew up around appeared burdened, unhappy, and forced to endure difficult situations in their marriages.
Drawing from her professional background in data analysis, she argued that historical patterns often provide clues about future outcomes.
“Everything I’ve seen growing up, the way our grandfathers treated our grandmothers, the way our fathers treated our mothers, the way our mothers were workhorses and suffering, I told myself from a young age that marriage would not be my portion,” she said.
The 46-year-old further admitted that whenever a relationship begins to move toward marriage, she immediately pulls away.
According to her, one of her greatest fears is becoming trapped in an unhappy marriage.
“As soon as I feel like someone wants to marry me, I’m already heading for the door. I’m running away because I don’t want to be shackled down. My biggest fear in life is being stuck with a man and being miserable. I’d rather be miserable by myself,” she added.
Temitayo also claimed that she has yet to encounter a married couple whose relationship inspires her or makes her desire marriage.
She said she has never met a Nigerian husband whose treatment of his wife made her wish for a similar union.
