A Nigerian man, who requested anonymity, has recounted how he allegedly gave his brother ₦20 million for a business venture, only for him to disappear and become difficult to reach.

“I never thought I would one day describe my own brother as someone I could no longer trust. We grew up together, shared the same family and went through many things together. Because of that relationship, I never imagined that money could become the reason I would completely lose trust in him.

Some time ago, he approached me about a business opportunity and asked me for financial assistance. He told me that he needed ₦20 million to invest in the business and promised to repay me according to the agreement we had discussed. Because he was my brother, I trusted him. I didn’t feel the need to treat him like a stranger or someone who might deliberately deceive me. I gave him the money because I believed I was helping someone close to me.

Then his behaviour suddenly changed. His calls became increasingly difficult to reach, and his communication became almost nonexistent. I became worried and started asking other family members if they knew what was happening. Eventually, I realized that he had disappeared without properly accounting for the money. I was angry, disappointed and embarrassed at the same time. I kept asking myself how I could have trusted someone so completely simply because he was my brother. The experience has caused serious tension within our family. I don’t even know if I will recover the money, but losing my trust in my own brother has hurt me deeply. I have learned a painful lesson from this experience. No matter how close you are to someone, financial matters should be handled carefully, with proper agreements and accountability.”
