I FEEL LIKE DYING, MY PROMOTION WAS DENIED FIVE TIMES BECAUSE I REFUSE TO DATE MY BOSS – Shattered LADY SHARES
I have worked at my company for almost seven years. I started as an intern and worked my way up. I stayed late, handled extra responsibilities, covered for colleagues, and gave my job everything I had. My dream was to become a manager, and everyone around me knew I deserved that promotion. The first time I was denied, I was disappointed but hopeful. My boss told me I needed to “be more visible” and build a better relationship with management. I accepted the feedback and worked even harder.
A few weeks later, my boss invited me out for drinks. I politely declined. After that, things changed. He started making comments about how I was “too serious” and how successful women needed to know how to make powerful men happy. I ignored him.
When the next promotion opportunity came, I was passed over again. Then again. And again. Five times. Each time, someone less experienced than me got the position. I trained some of the people who were promoted ahead of me. I watched people who had spent less than two years in the company become my supervisors while I remained in the same position.
The worst part is that my boss never directly said, “Date me and you will get promoted.” But the message was always there. Whenever I refused his invitations, my performance suddenly became “not good enough.” Whenever I kept my distance, I was accused of not being a team player. But when I saw him laughing and spending time with female colleagues who seemed closer to him, they suddenly received opportunities I had been waiting years for.
I feel frustrated, angry and completely exhausted. I have cried so many times after work that I sometimes sit in my car for almost an hour before going home. I love my career, but I am starting to feel like my hard work means nothing.
I refuse to date my boss just to get a promotion, but I cannot lie—I am shattered. Five promotions denied. Five chances taken away.
And now, I honestly feel like my entire career is falling apart.
