From the Dirty and Poor Streets of Bariga into Stardom: The Story of Lil Kesh

Lil Kesh, who was born with the name: Keshinro Ololade, is a name popular in the Nigerian music industry.

However, his journey to the top isn’t as smooth as it seems. Like many aspiring artists, he faced numerous challenges along the way. From financial constraints to societal skepticism about a career in music, Lil Kesh encountered many obstacles.

Hailing from the streets of Bariga, Lagos, Lil Kesh discovered his passion for music at a tender age. In 2012, his debut single, “Lyrically,” became a hit amongst the Nigerian youth.

Despite his undeniable talent, Lil Kesh faced setbacks and failures along the way. Rejection from record labels and the challenging process of breaking into the competitive music industry tested his determination.

Recognizing his talent, Olamide, the owner of YBNL Nation record label, signed Lil Kesh in 2014. This marked a turning point. The label’s influence propelled Lil Kesh further into the spotlight. Then came “Shoki,” a song that took the Nigerian streets by storm, with its infectious beat and dance style.

Despite the popularity and success of “Shoki,” Lil Kesh’s path wasn’t without hurdles. Taking advantage of the initial success proved challenging. While subsequent releases like “Efejoku”, “Gbese”, and “Is It Because…?” gained accolades, getting the same “Shoki” magic was extremely difficult.

Also, balancing the demands of a music career with his studies proved difficult.

In 2016, Lil Kesh made a drastic decision. He left YBNL to pursue a solo career. He released his debut album, “Y.A.G.I,” (an acronym for “Young And Getting It”) which included songs like “Rora” and “Jankey”.

In 2020, his second studio album, “Estacy,” showcased his growth as a musician. He dabbled in genres like Afropop and dancehall, showcasing his versatility.

Lil Kesh’s story is one of perseverance. He faced the challenge of following up a hit song, navigated the difficulties of the industry, and carved his own space. He has collaborated with industry heavyweights like Wizkid, Phyno and Davido, solidifying his position as a major force in the music industry.

Lil Kesh’s hard work has earned him several awards, including the City People Music Award for Popular Song of the Year. Despite facing challenges and the pressure to maintain peak popularity, he has carved a space for himself in the Nigerian music industry.

Today, Lil Kesh remains an influential figure. He is a testament to the power of hard work and resilience. As Lil Kesh continues to evolve as an artist, one thing remains certain: Lil Kesh’s journey is far from over.
