NIGERIAN SOLDIERS’ MONTHLY SALARY INCREASED FROM ₦49,000 to ₦100,000 – DEFENCE MINISTER

The Federal Government has announced an increase in the monthly salary of Nigerian soldiers, raising the minimum pay from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000. The announcement was made by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel serving across the country. According to the government, the salary adjustment is aimed at boosting the morale of soldiers who continue to confront security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities. Authorities believe that improving the welfare of troops is essential to enhancing their commitment and effectiveness in protecting the nation.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While many welcomed the increase, describing it as a long-overdue recognition of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, others argued that the new salary may still be inadequate considering the high cost of living and the risks soldiers face daily.

Some commentators also called on the government to complement the salary increase with better healthcare, housing, insurance, modern equipment, and support for the families of military personnel. They stressed that improved welfare should go beyond monthly pay to include better working conditions and post-service benefits.

As discussions continue, many Nigerians hope the salary review marks the beginning of broader reforms within the armed forces. Supporters believe that investing in the welfare of soldiers will not only improve their morale but also strengthen the country’s overall security and defence capabilities.
