VOODOOS EXIST IN AFRICA AND THEY WORK – ACTRESS IYABO OJO SAYS
Nigerian actress Iyabo Ojo has defended Nollywood’s use of traditional themes and supernatural elements, explaining that African filmmakers reflect the continent’s realities, beliefs, and imagination rooted in its culture.
During a conversation with British-Nigerian radio presenter Remi Burgz, Ojo responded to criticisms that Nollywood productions are not taken seriously because of their mystical storylines and visual effects. She emphasized that African storytelling is deeply connected to local beliefs, spirituality, and folklore, which influence Nollywood plots.
Ojo stated: Well, it’s Africa, and we have to tell our story the way it is, no matter how much we want to westernize it or modernize it. There are voodoos in Africa, and they work.”
She encouraged filmmakers not to shy away from portraying cultural realities and imaginative concepts, highlighting Nollywood’s creativity and unique storytelling style. Ojo also noted that even exaggerated or humorous special effects reflect Nigerian storytellers’ imagination and the industry’s effort to project African narratives globally.
