NIGERIA HAS THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF PRIVATE JETS in AFRICA, SAYS AVIATION MINISTER
Nigeria has emerged as the African country with the highest number of private jets, with nearly 240 aircraft currently in operation, according to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. The revelation has sparked widespread discussion about the country’s aviation sector, wealth distribution, and the increasing use of private aircraft for business and personal travel.
Speaking on the state of the aviation industry, Keyamo noted that the large number of private jets reflects the growing demand for executive air travel in Nigeria. He explained that many of the aircraft are owned by corporate organisations, high-net-worth individuals, and businesses that rely on private aviation to improve efficiency and reduce travel time across the country and beyond.
Despite the impressive figure, the announcement has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some view it as a sign of economic activity and investment in the aviation sector, others argue that the statistic contrasts sharply with the economic realities facing many citizens, including rising inflation, unemployment, and the high cost of living.
Industry experts have also pointed out that having a large private jet fleet comes with responsibilities. They stressed the need for stronger regulatory oversight, improved maintenance standards, and strict compliance with aviation safety regulations to ensure that all aircraft operate in accordance with international best practices.
As conversations continue, many Nigerians are calling for greater transparency regarding the ownership, registration, and operation of private jets in the country. The Aviation Ministry is expected to continue implementing reforms aimed at strengthening the sector while ensuring that the growth of private aviation contributes positively to Nigeria’s overall economic development.
