“I COULDN’T TAKE IT” — WOMAN DUMPS EIGHT-MONTH BOYFRIEND AFTER DISCOVERING HE HAS MOUTH ODOUR

I never imagined that something as simple as mouth odour would be the reason my eight-month relationship would come to an end. It still sounds unreal even to me, but I reached a point where I just couldn’t ignore it anymore.

We met online, and for months, everything about him seemed perfect. He was attentive, kind, and very consistent—something that’s honestly rare these days. Our relationship was long-distance, so most of our communication was through calls and video chats. I admired how intentional he was, and I really thought I had found someone worth building with.

The first time I noticed something was off was during one of our video calls. He leaned closer to the camera while talking, and I instinctively pulled my phone away. At first, I brushed it off, telling myself it was probably nothing or maybe just my imagination. But as time went on, I began to notice it more frequently during our calls. It got to a point where I would feel uncomfortable staying on long conversations.

I tried to be understanding. I even suggested things casually, like chewing gum or maintaining a routine, hoping he would pick up on the hint. But nothing changed. When we finally met in person after months of talking, it became impossible to ignore. The smell was strong, and it made close conversations very difficult for me.

I struggled with what to do because, aside from this issue, he was genuinely a good person. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings or come across as shallow, but I also couldn’t pretend everything was fine when it wasn’t. It started affecting how I felt around him, and I found myself pulling away emotionally.

Eventually, I decided to have an honest conversation with him. It wasn’t easy, and I was very careful with my words. He seemed a bit embarrassed but didn’t take it as seriously as I expected. That was when I realized that this might not change anytime soon.

At that point, I had to choose my comfort and honesty over forcing something that didn’t feel right. Ending the relationship wasn’t easy, but I knew it was the best decision for me.

Sometimes, it’s the little things people overlook that end up making the biggest difference.
