OMAHLAY SPARKS DEBATE AS HE NAMES WIZKID, AYRA STARR, BURNA BOY AS INDUSTRY IDOLS

Nigerian singer Omah Lay has stirred conversations online after openly naming some of his colleagues as the people he looks up to in the music industry.

In a video making the rounds on social media, the “Soso” crooner was asked about the artistes he considers his idols. In response, Omah Lay mentioned Afrobeats heavyweights Wizkid and Burna Boy, alongside fast-rising star Ayra Starr.

“I really look up to Wizkid, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy… they are my idols in the industry,” he said.

His statement, however, quickly sparked mixed reactions among fans online. While some praised his humility and willingness to acknowledge fellow artistes, others questioned his choice of words—particularly his inclusion of Ayra Starr, who is often seen as part of a younger generation of Afrobeats stars.

Some social media users argued that describing contemporaries as “idols” might downplay Omah Lay’s own influence and status in the industry. Others, however, defended him, noting that admiration among peers is not unusual and reflects mutual respect within the music scene.

The debate also highlights ongoing conversations about hierarchy, influence, and competition in Nigeria’s music industry, where artistes are often compared based on success, longevity, and global reach.

Despite the differing opinions, many fans agree that Omah Lay’s comment underscores the collaborative spirit within Afrobeats, a genre that continues to gain international recognition.

As discussions continue online, neither Omah Lay nor the artistes he mentioned have publicly responded to the reactions trailing his statement.
