I am a very peaceful woman. In fact, if you ask anybody who knows me, they will tell you that I don’t keep grudges.

Once you offend me, I forgive you.I don’t fight. I don’t insult. I don’t even confront you most of the time. I simply smile, say “it’s okay” and continue with my life.

But there is one small thing I do. I remember your name. Not because I am angry, please. I just believe that history is important.

People have been calling me unforgiving because I can remember exactly what someone did to me three years ago. I don’t understand why that is a problem. Forgiveness does not mean I should develop amnesia.

My friend once borrowed ₦50,000 from me and disappeared for almost one year. When she eventually returned, she said she had forgotten.

I told her, “No problem.” She thought everything was fine.

Last month, she came back asking me to borrow her ₦200,000. I smiled. I said, “No problem.” Then I reminded her about the ₦50,000 she had “forgotten.” She started laughing and said I was still keeping grudges. Keeping grudges?

Me? I had already forgiven her. I simply remembered that my money had previously travelled on a one-year vacation and never sent me a postcard.

Another person once embarrassed me publicly. I forgave him too. But when someone mentioned his name recently and asked if I could recommend him for a job, I said, “He is a very nice person.”

Then I added, “But I don’t think I know enough about his work to recommend him.” Was I wicked? No. I was simply protecting my peace and allowing history to speak for itself.

People think peaceful people are supposed to forget everything.

No. I forgive people because I don’t want their actions occupying my heart.

But their names? Those ones can remain safely archived.

After all, somebody has to preserve the historical records.

I am not keeping grudges. I am just keeping accurate documentation.
