I PRETENDED TO BE PREGNANT TO STOP MY BOYFRIEND FROM LEAVING ME — DESPERATE GIRLFRIEND CONFESSES
I never imagined that my relationship would reach a point where I would have to lie about something as serious as pregnancy just to keep the man I loved beside me. My name is being withheld because I am ashamed of what I did, and I know many people will judge me when they hear my story. My boyfriend and I had been together for almost three years, and throughout that period, I became so emotionally attached to him that the thought of losing him felt like losing a part of myself. He was the person I spoke to every morning and the last person I wanted to hear from before going to bed. Unfortunately, while I was busy planning a future with him, he had already started making plans that no longer included me.
The changes in his behaviour did not happen overnight. At first, he became increasingly busy and stopped calling as frequently as he used to. Whenever I complained, he would say he had a lot on his mind and needed some space. I tried to convince myself that it was only a temporary phase, but things became worse when he started avoiding conversations about our future. One evening, after several days of barely communicating, I asked him directly if he still wanted the relationship. He remained quiet for a while before telling me that he felt we were no longer compatible and that he thought it was time for us to go our separate ways. I cried and begged him to reconsider, but he seemed determined to end things.
For days, I could hardly concentrate on anything. I kept going through our old pictures and reading our previous conversations, hoping to find something that would explain how the man who once promised never to abandon me could suddenly walk away. My friends advised me to accept his decision and move on, but I refused to listen. I was convinced that if I could make him understand how much I loved him, he would change his mind. That was when I began considering something terrible. I thought that if he believed I was carrying his child, he would feel responsible and reconsider leaving me. At the time, I did not think about the consequences of my actions. All I could think about was finding a way to keep him.
One afternoon, I sent him a message asking him to meet me because I had something important to tell him. When he arrived, I struggled to look him in the eyes as I told him that I was pregnant. I had no pregnancy test result, no hospital confirmation and no evidence to support my claim. I had simply decided to lie. His expression changed immediately, and he asked me several questions about how far along I was and when I discovered it. I pretended to be emotional and told him I had been afraid to inform him because of the problems we had been having. He became unusually quiet, then asked me why I had waited until he wanted to leave before telling him such news.
His reaction was not exactly what I had expected, but it gave me hope. Instead of ending the relationship that day, he said we needed to discuss what to do next. He began calling more often and asking how I was feeling. For a brief period, I felt relieved because he was giving me the attention I had been desperately seeking. However, the relief came with constant fear. He wanted us to visit a hospital together, and I kept inventing excuses, claiming I was not ready or that I needed more time. Each excuse only made him more suspicious. Eventually, he told me that he could not understand why I would announce a pregnancy but refuse to confirm it medically.
The truth finally came out when he insisted that we go to a hospital together. With no way to continue the lie, I broke down and admitted that I was not pregnant. I told him I had made everything up because I was afraid of losing him and believed the news would make him stay. He stared at me in disbelief before asking how I could use something so serious to manipulate his feelings. He said he had been frightened and confused, trying to prepare himself for a responsibility he had never expected, only to discover that the entire situation was a lie. He was deeply hurt, not only because I had deceived him but because I had taken away his ability to make decisions about our relationship honestly. He left that day, and this time, he made it clear that he did not want to continue seeing me.
Since then, I have replayed everything in my mind and wondered why I allowed my fear of being abandoned to push me into such a desperate decision. I wanted to save my relationship, but instead, I destroyed the little trust that remained between us. I have apologised to him, although I understand that an apology does not automatically repair the damage I caused. Some of my friends say I was simply afraid of losing someone I loved, while others believe I crossed a line that should never have been crossed. Looking back, I realise that love cannot be forced through guilt, fear or deception. I still miss him, but I am beginning to understand that keeping someone beside you is not the same as being genuinely loved by that person. My greatest regret is that I may have lost him not only because our relationship was failing, but because I was too afraid to let him make his own choice.
