NIGERIA CONFRONTS SOUTH AFRICA OVER RENEWED XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS ON NIGERIANS
Tensions have once again surfaced between Nigeria and South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other African migrants living in South Africa. The latest incidents, which reportedly claimed lives, destroyed businesses, and forced hundreds of Nigerians to seek evacuation, have sparked strong diplomatic reactions from the Nigerian government.
Speaking during diplomatic engagements between both countries, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, condemned the recurring attacks, describing them as unacceptable and damaging to the longstanding relationship between Africa’s two largest economies.
The minister expressed concern that the attacks were not limited to undocumented migrants but also affected Nigerians who are legally resident in South Africa. He stressed that every individual, regardless of nationality, deserves protection under the law and should not become a victim of mob violence or targeted attacks.
Enikanolaiye further questioned the effectiveness of South Africa’s response, warning that repeated incidents and what appears to be inadequate intervention by law enforcement could create the impression that such attacks are being tolerated. He maintained that anyone accused of committing a crime should be investigated, arrested, and prosecuted through the country’s judicial system rather than being subjected to vigilante justice.
In response, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to combating xenophobia, racism, and all forms of discrimination. He assured Nigeria that South Africa does not condone attacks on foreign nationals and pledged that those responsible for the violence would be identified and prosecuted.
Despite the rising tensions, both countries have agreed to continue diplomatic discussions aimed at resolving the crisis and strengthening cooperation. Nigeria is also expected to pursue compensation and justice for citizens affected by the attacks.
The renewed dispute underscores the persistent challenge of xenophobia in South Africa and raises fresh concerns about the safety of African migrants across the continent. As diplomatic efforts continue, many will be watching closely to see whether concrete measures are taken to prevent future attacks and preserve the historic relationship between Nigeria and South Africa.
