UK-BASED NIGERIAN HUSBAND LEFT SPEECHLESS AFTER WIFE REQUESTS MONTHLY UPKEEP DESPITE SHARED FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENT

A UK-based Nigerian husband has stirred debate online after sharing a conversation with his wife that changed the way he views finances in marriage.

According to the man, he and his wife relocated to the United Kingdom, where he is on a sponsored work visa while his wife is in the country as his dependant. The couple also have an 18-month-old child.

He explained that after deductions, he earns £2,000 monthly, while his wife earns £1,700. To manage their household expenses, they agreed that his entire salary would cover rent and other bills, while his wife’s income would go toward food expenses and savings.

However, during a conversation one evening, his wife reportedly asked whether, as a responsible husband, he shouldn’t also be giving her a monthly allowance for personal expenses such as hair, nails, and other upkeep.

The man said the question left him speechless because, according to him, his entire salary is already committed to paying household bills, leaving him with little or nothing for personal spending.

He also noted that due to the conditions of his sponsorship and their childcare responsibilities, he is unable to work beyond the permitted hours to earn extra income.

When he questioned her about the request, he claimed she later dismissed it as a joke, saying she had only been teasing him.

Reflecting on their journey, the husband revealed that he sold his house and landed properties in Nigeria to finance their relocation to the UK.

He further stated that he played a significant role in helping his wife secure employment by completing job applications on her behalf, preparing her for interviews, and assisting with workplace training because she struggled with reading and writing.

The man also disclosed that he recently turned down an opportunity for his wife to secure a higher-paying civil service job through a friend, claiming he feared that an increase in her earnings could negatively influence her attitude.

His story has since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many users divided over whether a husband should provide a personal allowance for his wife regardless of her income, while others questioned his decision to decline a better job opportunity on her behalf.
