MY FIANCÉ IS STINGY, HE PUT OUR WEDDING ON HOLD BECAUSE I DEMANDED A ₦50 MILLION WEDDING — SAD LADY SHARES
I honestly never thought my wedding plans would end this way. When my fiancé proposed to me, I was over the moon. We had been together for some time, and I genuinely believed we were ready to take the next step. We started talking about the kind of wedding we wanted, the guests, the venue, the outfits, the decorations and everything in between.
I had always dreamed of having a big, beautiful wedding. Not just an ordinary ceremony, but one that my family and friends would remember for years. So when we started discussing the budget, I told him exactly what I wanted. I wanted us to spend about ₦50 million on the wedding. To me, it wasn’t an unreasonable request. I had already imagined the kind of venue, décor, food, entertainment and outfits I wanted. I also felt that since it was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, we shouldn’t be afraid to spend money to make it special.
But my fiancé did not see things the same way. The moment I mentioned ₦50 million, he went quiet. I thought he was simply surprised by the amount, but later he told me that he couldn’t understand why I wanted us to spend that much money on a single day. He said we should have a beautiful wedding without trying to impress people.
That statement really upset me. I told him that I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. I simply wanted the wedding I had always dreamed of, and I expected my husband-to-be to support me. Instead, he accused me of being unreasonable and told me that marriage was more important than the wedding ceremony. We argued about it several times. I eventually told him that if he truly loved me, he shouldn’t be making me feel guilty for wanting a proper wedding. Then, something I never expected happened. He told me that until we could agree on a realistic budget, he was putting the wedding plans on hold.
I was shocked. Our families had already started making preparations, and people close to us knew we were getting married. Now I have to explain to everyone that there is no wedding date anymore. What hurts me the most is that I now feel like my fiancé is stingy. I don’t expect him to give me everything I ask for, but I believe a man should be willing to spend on his wedding and make his wife happy. He, on the other hand, keeps saying that he doesn’t want us to start our marriage with unnecessary financial pressure. Now I’m beginning to wonder if this is really about the wedding or if we simply have very different ideas about money and marriage.
I love him, but I also don’t want to enter a marriage where I constantly feel like I have to beg my husband to spend money on things that matter to me.
For now, the wedding is officially on hold. And honestly, I don’t know whether we are going to find a compromise or whether this disagreement has exposed a much bigger problem between us.
