I LOVE Getting Pregnant, Surrogate Mother Shares Story
“Daydreaming about the family I would help was fun… we ended up being a perfect match!”
I initially chose to become involved in surrogacy because I watched some very dear friends struggle with infertility. I knew they would be amazing parents and it broke my heart that they may not have the opportunity to have a family of their own. The most rewarding parts of my life are my kids – watching how they grow, seeing myself and my husband in them, experiencing life all over again through their eyes. If I could help another parent experience these feelings, then I was all in! As a bonus, I also happen to LOVE being pregnant! I have four children, including a set of twins. And yes, even pregnant with twins, I enjoyed it!
My husband and I were open to helping a loving couple who lived anywhere in the world, and I was hoping to work with a family who wanted twins. Daydreaming about the family I would help was fun, and just a few weeks after I was approved, I received the phone call – NWSC had a family for me to consider! It was a same-sex family from Belgium and they were the sweetest, kindest people. It was a perfect match.
The surrogacy surpassed all of my expectations. I wanted to help a family and I loved being pregnant, but nothing prepared me for the overwhelming feelings when I saw the dads holding their twins for the first time after delivery! My heart could have burst! It wasn’t just happiness I saw on their faces, but a sense of wholeness. They had the missing pieces from their lives. I immediately told myself: “If I am approved to do this again, I will.” Knowing the difference I’d made and the lives changed through the birth of those sweet twins was so fulfilling.
I delivered their twins two years ago and am currently doing a sibling journey with the same family and it is very exciting. I have a very close relationship with them – we still chat via WhatsApp several times a week and Skype chat once a month. They regularly send me pictures of the twins and it is wonderful to watch their family growing up. I traveled to Belgium to visit them and they have visited us in Oregon, too! My children are impatiently waiting for their turn to visit Belgium, and it will be quite the trip when we all travel there together!
My kids and my IPs are very close. They Skype with us and send presents on holidays and birthdays and my kids/surrokids refer to themselves as “siblings of the heart.” The experience has been an amazing way for my kids to learn compassion for others and the importance of using what you have available to help others. This has been a life-changing experience for me, my husband and our kids. NWSC was so helpful and supportive. I’ve met some amazing women through their private Facebook group and through their local events. Molly (my Case Manager) was so helpful, knowledgeable, supportive and FUNNY. She made a great experience even better. I will be forever thankful that I reached out to NWSC, helped an amazing family and also helped mine at the same time!
If you’re considering becoming a surrogate, I encourage you to reach out! It will change your life in so many ways. It will also change the life of another family, and that’s pretty remarkable.
