I HELPED MY FRIEND GET A JOB — HE ENDED UP TAKING MY PLACE – MAN SHARES SHOCKING STORY
I trusted him because we grew up together.
We were both struggling, both jobless, both tired of explaining our lives to people who thought we weren’t trying hard enough. When I finally got a job through someone I knew, he was the first person I told.
He celebrated me more than anyone else.
A few months into the job, my office mentioned they were looking for another staff. Without thinking twice, I recommended him. I spoke well of him. I even helped him prepare for the interview.
He got the job.
At first, everything felt fine. We resumed together. Ate lunch together. Complained about work together. I thought we were winning together.
Then small things started changing.
He began staying late at the office. He volunteered for tasks I normally handled. He started reporting directly to our supervisor without looping me in. When I asked, he laughed it off.
“Guy, we’re just trying to shine.”
I didn’t see the danger until it was too late.
One morning, I was called into the office. I was told my performance had dropped. That I was no longer as committed. That complaints had been made.
I was confused.
Those “complaints” were things I had done but someone else had taken credit for. Ideas I shared privately had been presented as his. Mistakes that weren’t mine were quietly attached to my name.
Within weeks, my role was reduced.
Within a month, I was let go.
He kept his job.
When I confronted him, he didn’t deny it. He just said, “Na survival. You go understand.”
That was the day I learned a hard Nigerian truth sometimes, helping someone doesn’t build loyalty. It builds competition.
Losing the job hurt.
But losing a friend that way hurt deeper.
