HE SAID WE SHOULD KEEP IT SECRET- TIWA SAVAGE OPENS UP ON HER LOVE LIFE

Tiwa Savage has always been known for her confidence, her commanding voice, and the energy she brings to the stage. But behind the glamour and strength, the Afrobeats queen has had her share of heartbreak. In a recent interview on The Joe Budden Podcast, Tiwa got candid about a past relationship she described as her “most disrespectful” one that left her questioning her worth and the meaning of love itself.

The singer revealed that she once dated a man who made her believe in the beauty of privacy until that same privacy turned into humiliation. “He said we should keep it secret,” Tiwa shared. “At first, I thought it was about protecting what we had from public opinion, but over time, I realized I was the only one being hidden.”

According to her, the secrecy soon turned painful. The same man who called her every night and made her feel special in private treated her like a stranger in public. “We’d go out together, and he’d be talking and laughing with other women right in front of me,” she said. “And I couldn’t react. I couldn’t say anything because, remember, nobody was supposed to know we were together.”

Tiwa admitted that the experience slowly chipped away at her confidence. Being in the public eye meant constantly appearing happy and flawless, even while dealing with silent heartbreak. “Imagine being in love but having to act like you’re not,” she said. “You can’t post, you can’t hold hands, you can’t even acknowledge the person you care about. It messes with your mind.”

For a long time, she convinced herself that keeping things quiet was the mature thing to do. But as time passed, she realized the truth that the man she loved wasn’t trying to protect their relationship, he was simply protecting himself. “That’s not love,” she said firmly. “That’s control disguised as privacy.”

The award-winning singer said the experience taught her a painful but important lesson about silence and strength. “I used to think staying quiet made me strong,” Tiwa explained. “But I’ve learned that sometimes, silence just gives power to the person who’s disrespecting you.”

Now, she uses her platform to remind women that love should never come at the cost of self-respect. “If someone truly values you, they won’t hide you,” she said. Though she didn’t mention any names, her honesty struck a chord with fans who praised her for speaking up about the kind of emotional neglect that many people silently endure.
